Sorry, Mr. President – April 14, 2020

President Trump proclaimed yesterday that the President “calls the shots” and that the power of the President is “total.” Vice President Pence backed him up, saying that the power of the President in an emergency is “plenary.”

Sorry, Mr. President, the U.S. Constitution did not establish a monarchy. Far from it.

In 1958, President Eisenhower, facing Russian threats to American democracy, declared May 1 would henceforth be known as “Law Day,” a day to honor and celebrate the Rule of Law. Today, facing threats to democracy at home, Lawyers Defending American Democracy – a bipartisan, national coalition of attorneys, many of them leaders in the profession – called upon all lawyers to shine a spotlight on President Trump for violating fundamental, non-partisan principles and norms of American democracy.

Lawyers Defending American Democracy was conceived by a diverse and nonpartisan group of attorneys, including former federal and state judges, United States Attorneys, managing partners of large law firms, law deans and other distinguished lawyers from around the country.

We have authored an open letter demanding that President Donald Trump honor the fundamental principles, norms and values of our democracy, and urge the legal community – in particular, members and leaders of America’s national, state and local bar associations, law schools, law firms and fellow lawyers nationwide – to join us in speaking out against the threats to our democracy.
