LDAD Releases an “Election Action Dashboard” in advance of the 2020 Elections – October 19, 2020

In a plea to America’s Lawyers, the Steering Committee of Lawyers Defending American Democracy urges participation in voter-protection activities ahead of this November’s election in a new Open Letter. LDAD files Amicus Brief in the Michael Cohen Habeas Corpus Case – July 22, 2020

LDAD’s amicus brief argues the attempt to imprison Cohen after he refused to refrain from writing about his experiences with President Trump was an act of unconstitutional, political vengeance that grossly violated Cohen’s First Amendment rights.

A Renewed Call for the Resignation of Attorney General William Barr – July 14, 2020

Lawyers Defending American Democracy has issued a statement in response to the commutation of Roger Stone by President Donald Trump. LDAD has previously called for the resignation of Attorney General Barr is an Open Letter signed by 200 distinguished attorneys. It is renewing that call in light of last week’s commutation, which the group describes as “hugely corrosive” to the rule of law.

LDAD Responds to Court’s Order to Drop Case Against Michael Flynn – June 24, 2020

Lawyers Defending American Democracy has issued a statement in response to today’s order by the DC Circuit Court of Appeals to dismiss criminal charges against former national security adviser Michael Flynn. The group had previously filed amicus two briefs in the U.S. District Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals – both for the District of Columbia – in the case of Michael Flynn.

LDAD Files a Brief in the Appeals Court – May 27, 2020

Lawyers Defending American Democracy has filed a brief in the appeals court arguing that Michael Flynn’s petition for a writ of mandamus should be denied. The brief supports one the group filed last week in the district court. In this new filing, the group argues that ordering the district court to grant the government’s motion to dismiss at this point – before the District Court has ruled – would “threaten public confidence in the administration of justice.”

President Trump proclaimed yesterday that the President “calls the shots” and that the power of the President is “total.” Vice President Pence backed him up, saying that the power of the President in an emergency is “plenary.”

Sorry, Mr. President, the U.S. Constitution did not establish a monarchy. Far from it.
